To parents and guardians of kids 13 years and older, Congratulations! Your child has reached the teenage years. We want to help your teen prepare to be an active participant in his/her/their medical care. At the annual well child check, we will be administering an Adolescent Health Questionnaire as well as starting to talk to your adolescent independently for part of the visit. While the transition from childhood to adulthood can be exciting, it can present some unique challenges. Thus, it is crucial for us to both use the questionnaire and take the time to talk to your adolescent in private to help address issues that he/she/they may not necessarily be comfortable discussing with a guardian in the room. Please click here to read more about adolescent health services at Lowry Pediatrics.

We are excited to share with you a new free resource that we will be offering to families with children between the ages of zero and five years old: the Sparks Parent Video Series. There are 14 Sparks videos (available in both English and Spanish). Each video pairs with one of the well-child visits your child will have during the first five years of life. The videos were created by doctors and parenting experts. They are designed to build on what you discuss with your child’s provider at their well-child visits. We will be sharing these videos with families around the time of all well-child visits for children ages zero to five years. We hope you will consider watching them.

Due to the recent spread of the COVID-19 in the US, Lowry Pediatrics will temporarily change its patient schedule for the next 8 weeks. In an effort to align with the social distancing recommendations, some changes are being made to our previously established policies and protocols. These measures are intended to maximize the safety of our patients and staff and are being updated on a daily basis. Beginning Wednesday, March 18, all well-child visits will be limited to essential vaccines only with children under 2 years of age being scheduled in the morning and children needing vaccines for Kindergarten being scheduled in the early afternoon. Virtual visits will be scheduled for sick visits or other concerns (ADHD follow ups, eczema follow ups, etc.). Patients requiring additional evaluation will be addressed on a case-by-case basis. Our goal is to both: Prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses within our office and community. Alleviate the strain currently being experienced by local emergency departments. Parents: If you or your child is ill with fever and/or cough on the day of your appointment, please call our office ( 720-859-8222 ) to obtain an appointment for a virtual visit so that we may assess your child. During this time, we encourage you and your family to: Practice good hand hygiene by frequently washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or using hand sanitizer when washing with soap and water is not an option Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands Cover coughs and sneezes Disinfect and clean surfaces that are frequently touched Practice social distancing and self-quarantine by staying home to help decrease community spread of the virus. If you must go out, try to be at least 6 feet away from other people As things return to normal we will work with our families to get regular appointments back on track. We are here for you. This situation is constantly evolving, and we pledge to keep our patients and families updated throughout this process. If you have any questions or concerns, call us! Thank you for your patience. Please remember to take care of yourselves during this stressful time, Eat right, get plenty of sleep and exercise while practicing social distancing! Vaccine Policy: We will not accept patients in our practice who do not follow at least our minimum vaccine and timetable requirements which we would be happy to discuss with you. There are those rare cases when there is a true medical contraindication or reason for delaying a vaccine and this policy is not applicable to those patients. Alternate schedules, although discouraged, will be honored as long as they are meeting our minimum requirements. BACKGROUND Vaccines have been a life saver for millions of children around the world . Before vaccines, many children would die or have life long disabilities due to the diseases now preventable by vaccines. Although no vaccine can be 100% safe, reactions to vaccines are extremely rare . There are many fine websites that accurately and honestly discuss the virtues as well as any possible disadvantages of vaccines. Unfortunately, there are many that are full of falsehoods, paranoia and lies. This has led to an irrational fear among some parents and thus a small, but significant percentage of children unvaccinated. This unfortunately raises the risk of vaccine-preventable diseases for everyone. OUR DECISION By choosing not to vaccinate, a parent is refusing one of our strongest recommendations--to vaccinate one's child. If a parent trusts us to treat their child, they should trust us on such an important medical decision as vaccination. It would seem logical to have one's child seen at a practice whose values and opinions are closer to their own. Children who are not vaccinated are at much higher risk of catching a vaccine preventable disease and may be contagious in our waiting room. This puts everyone, but especially babies or immunocompromised patients at risk. Finally, we feel that we are at increased risk of making an incorrect medical decision when we are called after hours and do not know a child's vaccination status. An unvaccinated child with a cough or fever involves totally different decision making than one with vaccinations. Those who choose not to follow our policy will be given 30 days to find a new pediatrician; we will continue to see those children for acute care during that time.
